Wenger: Arsenal can't catch Chelsea

Jose Mourinho’s side are three points clear of Manchester City and a further point ahead of the Gunners, and the former Monaco coach believes they will not allow their lead to slip

Despite closing to within four points of leaders Chelsea, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is not anticipating a title challenge from his side.

The Gunners made hard work of a 2-1 win at Newcastle with Olivier Giroud scoring two first-half goals to give the visitors a vital win, which keeps them in touch of the top two.

But Wenger admits Chelsea – who have two games in hand on Arsenal – have too much of an advantage to be overhauled by either the north London outfit or second-placed Manchester City.

“Chelsea has a good security and I think they have enough to be quite serene,” the French coach told reporters at St James’ Park.

“I think Chelsea has too much security. I think at the moment we are not concluding we have still to fight and get the points.

“We will try and win the next game and then the next one, that is what we have to do – but you could see a few players were tired today.”

Wenger admits his side were ran very close by Newcastle but he feels many of his players were showing tiredness on Tyneside.

“The last 15 minutes were difficult and our legs had gone, but we had an outstanding first-half going forward and in the second-half we had to show something different.”

Wenger singled out match winner Giroud for his contribution, adding: “He was very good, you can see he scores goal but also keeps the ball. He played very well.”
