The Chilean was on the verge of a move to Merseyside as part of the deal that took Luis Suarez to Barcelona before changing his mind and opting for north London
Arsene Wenger admits he does not know why Alexis Sanchez chose to join Arsenal over Liverpool last summer but has voiced his delight that the Chilean decided to move to north London.
Alexis was understood to be on the brink of joining Liverpool as part of the deal that took Luis Suarez to Barcelona, but reportedly chose Arsenal because of his partner’s wish to live in London rather than on Merseyside.
Wenger insists he was never told the reasoning for Alexis’s decision but is happy the Chilean will be on his team when the two top-four rivals face off at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
“At the end of the day, only Sanchez can explain to you why he has chosen us,” Wenger told reporters. “I don’t know why he did that, but we are happy that he made that decision.
“I was [aware of Liverpool’s interest], but you never know if it is really true, but I thought it could be because of the interest in Suarez [from Barcelona].
“In the negotiations, yes, it is a strength – and it makes sense, an exchange and some money for Liverpool.”
Alexis has made an impressive impact in England so far, scoring 19 goals in 42 appearances in all competitions to help fire the Gunners into third in the Premier League and the FA Cup semi-finals.
“If you look at the qualities, efficiency, work-rate, fighting spirit – [he is at the] top,” Wenger added. “When it [the game] becomes flat, he can revitalise the strengths and dynamics of the team and the supporters.”
