Premier League Team of the Week: Ozil & Ramsey shine for Arsenal

The midfield pair linked well to ensure that the Gunners picked up maximum points at Sunderland, while elsewhere there are inclusions for a couple of deadline-day signings

After a lengthy international break the Premier League returned this weekend, providing an opportunity for many deadline-day signings to show their mettle at their new homes.
No fewer than 10 of the 11 make their first appearance in this season’s Team of the Week and there is also a place for two summer signings.

In goal, Jussi Jaaskelainen (scoring a 4 in our ratings) made a string of fine saves for West Ham away to Southampton, collecting his third clean sheet of the season to just edge out Joe Lewis and Joe Hart.

We are employing a three-man defence this week to help accommodate an array of midfield talent and we start with Ashley Williams (4), who put in a commanding performance in Swansea City’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool. The Welshman distributed the ball cleverly and only saw his back line breached thanks to two sloppy passes by Jonjo Shelvey.

Alongside Williams, we have Gareth McAuley (3.5), who netted a last-gasp equaliser at Craven Cottage to claim a point for his West Brom side. This goal capped a fine spell for the Northern Irishman after a goal apiece against Portugal and Luxembourg during the international break.

The final member of our defence is Phil Jagielka (3.5), who followed up a strong performance in Kiev for England with an indomitable display for Everton, helping Roberto Martinez’s team defeat Chelsea 1-0 on Saturday. Curtis Davies, Robert Huth and Sylvain Distin came close to being included.

In midfield, the Arsenal pair of Mesut Ozil (4.5) and Aaron Ramsey (4.5) delivered fantastic displays at the Stadium of Light as Arsene Wenger’s side secured a 3-1 win over Sunderland.

Ozil marked his debut with a low cross for Olivier Giroud to claim his first assist for the Gunners, while Ramsey netted twice after the break – the first a delicious volley – to keep the north London side in command.

Helping out in midfield is Steve Sidwell (4), so often overlooked at Fulham. Yet his well-taken volley from a corner put the Cottagers 1-0 up against West Brom until their late collapse. Otherwise he passed well and won his tackles in a sensible midfield display.

On Sunday, Southampton and West Ham played out an error-strewn 0-0 draw on the south coast but Morgan Schneiderlin (4) continued to enhance his reputation with a dominant midfield performance. The Frenchman won plenty of challenges and was twice denied by Jaaskelainen in the closing stages when it seemed that he would score, though he did put in a meaty challenge on Mohamed Diame.

The final piece of the puzzle is Tottenham debutant Christian Eriksen (4), who wowed the White Hart Lane crowd with a stellar display in the club’s 2-0 win over Norwich City. The Dane joined from Ajax and showed supreme awareness to slide Gylfi Sigurdsson in on goal for the game’s opener. He just about keeps Hatem Ben Arfa, Tom Huddlestone and Steven Naismith on the sidelines.

Up front Wayne Rooney (4), complete with headband, delivered his best performance in a Manchester United shirt this season. He had already clipped a delightful ball to Robin van Persie as the Dutchman hit the crossbar before wrapping up the three points with a precise free kick from 25 yards.

Finally, Giroud (3.5) makes his way into the team for the second time this season for a well-taken opening goal at Sunderland and a clever assist for Ramsey’s second, as well as an all-round quality display.
