Embarrassed Arteta vows Arsenal will bounce back from Chelsea thrashing

The Gunners were hammered 6-0 by Jose Mourinho’s men but the Spaniard has urged his side to make amends by beating Swansea at the Emirates in midweek

Mikel Arteta has urged his Arsenal team-mates to get back to winning ways as quickly as possible following their 6-0 thrashing at Chelsea.

Arsene Wenger saw his 1000th game in charge of the Gunners spoiled by Jose Mourinho’s men, who ran riot at Stamford Bridge and put a massive dent in the north Londoners’ title hopes.

Arteta admits that he was embarrassed by the display, and has promised the club’s fans that the squad will bounce back ahead of their clash with Swansea.

“You cannot only just move on, you have to analyse what you’ve done and react,” he told Arsenal’s official website. “I’m expecting a big reaction on Tuesday because we have to and Saturday was not good enough for this football club.

“The pressure we put on ourselves by losing games like that is massive and there’s no need for it. We just disrupted the good season we were having. I don’t know what else to say apart from sorry to everyone at the club, the fans, and we promise that we will try hard to put that right.

“It hurts deeply inside. It’s embarrassing to be on a football pitch in that situation. Psychologically it’s really hard and when you go through that, you analyse it and you know you don’t want to be in that situation again.

“I promise everyone that we have that hunger to put it right. On Tuesday we have an opportunity again at home and we just need to bounce back.”

In the immediate aftermath of Saturday’s game many wrote off Arsenal’s chances of claiming this year’s Premier League crown, but Arteta believes they are still very much in the mix, despite falling seven points behind the league-leading Blues.

“This can change at any moment,” he added. “There are two midweek games again and it can change quickly around.

“We just need to be there again because if there’s any possibilities we have to be able to take it. Let’s try again, it’s been a difficult day but we need to stay together again and battle because what we can still get is very good.”
