After Arsenal’s 2-0 defeat against Dortmund on Tuesday night opinions regarding their newest signing Danny Welbeck started to circulate. Watching the game it was easy to take your frustration out on the poor performance on their £42 million player Ozil and seek blame in the long list of injures affecting the squad. But, after missing 3 decent chances, some fans were beginning to question whether Welbeck is the solution to the Gunner’s striking problems.
Wenger was quick to come to the defense of the 23-year old striker and has urged fans to have patience and wait for the youngster to settle into his new squad.
Wenger commented ‘Danny will improve; I don’t think we have to make a problem of that. He had a very lively first half. He had two or three good chances but couldn’t finish them. There was one obvious one. We have to be patient with him.’ Today, odds on Arsenal to win their next game against Aston Villa are at 5/6 –Stan James promotion may apply.
Welbeck’s goal scoring capabilities have come under criticism before from only scoring 29 times in 142 games when he played with United. However, since England’s 2-0 win over Switzerland recently where Welbeck scored both goals, he is emerging as the new national hero.
Wenger thinks that Danny is the key to success for the Gunners this season. During Welbeck’s first game with Arsenal, there was one huge difference- the atmosphere and the crowd was electric. The reason for this was, very simply, the presence of Welbeck, a striker in whom the crowd already have more faith and confidence than Oliver Giroud. And, although no goals were scored, his play and work rate were enough to win over fans.
With this new sense of life injected into diehard Arsenal fans, Wenger’s belief in and appreciation for Welbeck and of course the whole list of new world class players, the team certainly have what it takes to be serious contenders for this year’s title race.
