Arsenal transfer rumours: A way back for Ozil?

All the latest Arsenal transfer news, rumours and gossip in the 2021 winter window.

Sky Sports News’ Dharmesh Sheth told The Transfer Show on Monday:

“The priority for Arsenal for the first couple of weeks in this transfer window will be to release players on loan.

Sead Kolasinac has gone to Schalke and William Saliba has joined Nice on a straight loan deal. Mikel Arteta is thinking ‘he is part of my long-term plans, but at the moment he is not ready to come into the team, let’s use the next six months as his transitional period’.

“There are other players Arsenal would probably look at allowing to leave on loan or even sell if they can. Sokratis and Mustafi are both in the final six months of their contracts. Arsenal would be open to offers.

“If they can free up some wages and if they can free up some space in their squad, then it would pave the way for Arsenal to strengthen in an area they are looking to strengthen which is a creative, attacking midfielder.

“But if it transpires that they can’t offload enough players to free up enough wages then l don’t think you can rule out Mesut Ozil perhaps finding some sort of role at Arsenal in the final six months of his contract. I think the ideal scenario for Arsenal would be for someone to come in for Ozil – he’s eating up 350,000 a week in wages.

“But we can’t rule out Ozil still playing a part for Arsenal.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal have confirmed William Saliba has joined Nice on loan for the rest of the season.

But Technical Director Edu has stressed: “We’re confident he will have a great career with us”.
