Wilshere mocks Birmingham plight

The 22-year-old issued a stinging response to a Blues fan who had sought to ridicule Arsenal’s League Cup loss in 2011 by posting a picture of the England man in tears at Wembley

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has hit back at a Birmingham fan who taunted him over the Gunners’ League Cup heartbreak against the Blues exactly three years ago.

The England international was part of the side that suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at Wembley back in 2011, as goals from Nikola Zigic and Obafemi Martins sealed a huge cup upset.

The result had consequences for both sides, with Arsenal’s Premier League title bid stumbling afterwards and Birmingham winning just two of their next 12 league matches and relegated to the Championship.

On the anniversary of the defeat, one cheeky Blues fan took to Twitter to send Wilshere a picture of both the England midfielder and his team-mate, Wojciech Szczesny, looking despondent after the final whistle, asking: “Recovered yet?”

But he got a response he was not expecting when Wilshere re-tweeted his remark alongside a stinging reply: “Yes mate just about! Have Birmingham?!?”

The St Andrew’s outfit have not come close to returning to English football’s top-flight since their 2011 relegation and currently sit in 16th place in the Championship – 14 points shy of the promotion spots.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are in the thick of a title fight at the top of the Premier League table, and will take on Bayern Munich in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 clash in two weeks’ time.
