Wilshere: Arsenal can take nothing for granted against Besiktas

The Gunners know victory at the Emirates Stadium next Wednesday will see them into the Champions League group stage but the 22-year-old is urging caution

Jack Wilshere warns Arsenal have no room for complacency in their Champions League return leg with Besiktas next Wednesday.

Arsene Wenger’s men left Istanbul with a valuable 0-0 draw from Tuesday’s play-off first leg, a match that saw Aaron Ramsey dismissed late on for two bookable offences.

Enjoying home advantage, Arsenal will start as favourites to secure a place in the competition proper for the 17th season in a row.

However, Wilshere insists Besiktas will be going all out for the victory and has called for focus when the teams clash again at the Emirates Stadium.

“It is not going to be an easy game and we can’t take it for granted,” Wilshere told reporters.

“They are going to come full of confidence from their performance in the first game and we are going to have to start how they did and take the game to them.

“We always want to be in the Champions League and to attract players who can be in the Champions League. We know how big a game it is and we will treat it as a cup final.”

Arsenal could be boosted by the return of their German World Cup-winning trio of Per Mertesacker, Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski.

“Having won the World Cup can have an impact, but the Germans have got a fantastic mentality anyway,” he added.

“Last year, you saw that – they are great characters to have in the dressing room. We are looking forward to getting them back and it is going to make our squad even stronger.”
