Wenger: No complaints over Giroud red card

The Gunners boss was relieved to see his side take all three points at Craven Cottage, but knows that he must find a solution up front in light of his French forward’s suspension

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says he has no complaints about Olivier Giroud’s red card in their 1-0 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage.

The former Montpellier frontman ruined his own chances of a late season flourish as he saw red in the final minutes of the win, after stretching to control a ball that had gotten away from him.

His studs connected with the ankle of Fulham right-back Stanislav Manolev, and the 26-year-old will now face a three-game ban, with just four games remaining in the league calendar.

“It looked like it [deserved a red card], yes,” Wenger told Sky Sports.

“I spoke with Giroud just now and he said he slipped when he went for the ball and I don’t complain about [the decision].

“We have to find a solution up front now for the final games but that can happen and we have to deal with that.”

The France international has scored 11 goals in 33 games for Arsenal this season, and has looked more settled in the Premier League since the turn of the year.

Although his absence will be a detriment to Arsenal’s hopes of a top four finish, Wenger was eager to focus on the success of the immediate result.

He added: “Of course for us, after the draw against Everton, it was important to take three points. We had quite a positive first half but I don’t know why in the second half our game deteriorated.

“You have to give Fulham credit, they’re a good side who fought like mad because they went down to 10 men early on in the game and they played very well today.”

The Gunners now sit third, two points ahead of fourth placed Chelsea, and will look to stay their pursuit of Champions League football next season when they take on leaders Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium in a week’s time.

James Richardson, Les Ferdinand & Goal.com’s Peter Staunton run through the biggest transfer talking points of the week.
