Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given wants his old side to sign Arsenal superstar Alexis Sanchez in January, should Mike Ashley sell the club before the new year.
Ashley put the club up for sale a number of months ago with the aim of selling it before Christmas, and PCP Capital Partners, led by Amanda Staveley, have already submitted an offer in excess of £300m.
It is believed that the Sports Direct owner is holding out for £380m, and as he isn’t desperate to sell the club, he won’t budge on his valuation.
The news of Ashley selling the club led to celebrations from Newcastle fans, who believe that their owner hasn’t acted with the club’s interests at the forefront of his mind during his time in charge.
And Given, who spent 14 years at the club, is hoping that if a deal is struck before January, that his former side will go all out for a number of big names in January.
Speaking to the Daily Star, Given said: “If the investors come in and have got endless amounts of money, they could sign [Alexis] Sanchez, for example. It depends who these new owners are.
“I’m not saying he’ll go there and they could instead trawl down the bottom part of the league – you just don’t know how much money they’ll have.
“When you look at Sheikh Mansour when he came to Manchester City and signed Robinho.”
Given is also hopefully that a change within the board will see the Magpies back at the top of the table again, challenging for trophies on a consistent basis.
“I do believe they [new owners] can get back up challenging for the Premier League and Champions League football,” he added.
“It will take time but it’s a great stadium, the fans are unreal and it’s a big club.”
