The Arsenal boss admits the German is less elegant than other centre-backs in the Premier League but insists the 28-year-old shines in other areas
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger concedes Per Mertesacker’s displays are not pleasing on the eye but maintains the German is still “efficient and intelligent”.
The 28-year-old has made 29 Premier League appearances this season, moving ahead of both Thomas Vermaelen and Laurent Koscielny in the centre-back pecking order.
“Maybe he is less elegant and the visual impression is less pleasing but he is efficient and intelligent,” Wenger told reporters.
“He combines well with both Vermaelen and Laurent Koscielny. They are good partnerships. He is a bit better at positional play.
“I have three good centre-backs. I can’t be wrong when I make a decision because all three deserve to play.”
Arsenal, who travel to Fulham on Saturday, currently sit fourth in the Premier League, two points ahead of Tottenham. A win for Wenger’s men at Craven Cottage would see them leapfrog Chelsea in third.
