Everybody at Arsenal wants Wenger to stay, says Vermaelen

The Gunners boss has indicated his intention to sign a new contract and remain at the Emirates Stadium but is yet to fully commit to an extension to his current deal

Thomas Vermaelen says everybody at Arsenal wants manager Arsene Wenger to sign a new contract and stay at the Emirates Stadium.

The Frenchman has stated his intention to remain with the Gunners but is yet to tie himself to a new deal and recently indicated that he will assess his future at the end of the season.

And the Belgian is hoping that the Frenchman extends his stay in north London, which is already close to 18 years long and passed the 1,000-game milestone in March.

“Everybody wants him to stay as long as he can. He’s been incredible, what he’s done for this club and for the players as well,” Vermaelen told reporters. “We would be really happy for him signing on for a few more years.

“The spirit is unbelievable in the team. We’ve worked a lot on our team shape and everybody knows their role in the team, everybody’s working for each other and that’s because there is a great team spirit. That’s the great improvement for us this season.

“It is just the hunger in the team. Of course it was there before but the spirit is great and you can see us fighting for each other really hard.”

Arsenal clash with Everton on Sunday, knowing that the Toffees could close the gap on them in fourth place to just a single point with a win – and would have a game in hand as the end of the season approaches.
