Social Roundup: An Unforgiving Twitter Reacts to Spurs’ Abysmal Performance in North London Derby

Tottenham’s trip to the Emirates certainly surprised a large section of fans who believed that this Spurs side, who recently beat the European champions 3-0, would run rampant over their fierce rivals.

Fans and pundits alike believed that Tottenham had finally bridged the gap between them and their north London neighbours last season, after finishing above Arsenal for the first time in over 20 years.

However, the Gunners were the far better side as they came away with a 2-0 victory. It was a generous scoreline for Spurs, considering that Arsenal had control over the game for the majority of the 90 minutes.

Mesut Ozil once again was a standout performer as the German seems adamant to prove his critics wrong and display his class for the Gunners. Fellow German international Shkrodan Mustafi scored the first goal to break the deadlock, which was shortly followed by a second goal from Alexis Sanchez.

Tottenham will be looking for a better result as league leaders Manchester City are running away with the title.

It’s needless to say that Arsenal fans would take to Twitter to celebrate their performance; and here’s the best of their celebratory tweets:

Even famous Gooner Piers Morgan shared his delight over the victory:

However, Tottenham were the butt of the joke on Twitter following the game, with these serving as some of funniest tweets:

Outcast PSG Star Prefers Premier League Move With Arsenal & Chelsea Linked

Paris Saint-Germain winger Lucas Moura has reportedly decided to end his stay with the club in January and is targeting a move to England.

The Brazilian joined the French side in 2012 and had made an impressive 212 appearances before this season, scoring 44 times. However, the 25-year-old has only featured in five games for the club this campaign – totalling a measly 71 minutes.

Lucas is apparently in no doubt that his time at the club will come to an end, after holding talks with manager Unai Emery about his playing time in recent weeks.

According to UOL Esporte, the PSG boss has told the player that he should search for a new club, as financial restrictions and an overcrowded squad mean he will no longer be guaranteed game time in Paris.

The winger rejected opportunities in the summer to join Monaco and Sporting CP, so he could fight to get into the PSG starting XI. Lucas had hoped that his relationship with PSG’s world record signing Neymar would help his cause for a place in the side, but that hasn’t materialised.

England could now be a strong possibility for the Brazil international, with Arsenal and Chelsea the most likely destinations for the star.

The sale of Lucas, along with several other talents, looks to be a necessity for the French giants, who are preparing to be told by UEFA to raise £70m in revenue in order to be able to meet Financial Fair Play Requirements. Angel Di Maria and Javier Pastore are two other candidates for the exit door this winter.

Arsenal Goalkeeper Petr Cech Reveals What Frustrates Him About Life at Arsenal

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech has revealed that he has grown frustrated by his lack of Premier League titles since moving to the club in 2015.

The only silverware the Czech star, who lifted four Premier League trophies with Chelsea, has won with the Gunners came in May when Arsenal beat Cech’s former side 2-1 to lift the FA Cup.

Cech has revealed that he is disappointed at the club’s failure to win titles during his time at the club and understands the building frustrations among sections of the club’s fans.

Arsenal v Chelsea - The Emirates FA Cup Final

As quoted by to the Express, he said: “I have to say as a player you get frustrated as well when you don’t reach your targets because that’s why you come every day, prepare every day, why you train and I’m used to winning titles and I’m not happy when three years in a row you don’t win one.”

Cech won 13 major titles with Chelsea between 2004 and 2015, including four Premier League titles, while he has also taken home four Golden Glove awards.

He continued: “When I joined the club, you can see how big and strong the support the club has. People are passionate, they’ve been supporting the club over the years.

Arsenal v Brighton and Hove Albion - Premier League

“When you are used to seeing the team winning the title and suddenly have a 12 year gap then when you have a little hope, then there’s a little bit missing, you have one point missing there, two points missing here.

“That’s why last season the reaction of the fans was the strongest because when you accumulate year after year then I can understand the frustration.

4 Key Battles That Could Decide the Hugely Anticipated North London Derby on Saturday

It’s the first north London derby of the season as Tottenham Hotspur travel to Arsenal on Saturday, in what is sure to be another classic encounter.

Tottenham will be the more confident side of the two going into this match. Mauricio Pochettino’s men sit in joint-second in the Premier League table, level on points with Manchester United.

After defeat against Manchester City in their last league game, Arsenal trail in the race for a top four finish. They currently sit in sixth place, four points behind their north London rivals.

A win for Arsenal brings them within a point of catching Spurs. A victory for Tottenham keeps their title and top-four dreams alive. For both teams, pride and bragging rights are on the line.

Here are four key battles which could decide this huge game at the Emirates…

1. Harry Kane vs Laurent Koscielny

Harry Kane loves a north London derby. The Spurs star has six goals in his last six meetings with Arsenal and will be looking for more on Saturday.

Laurent Koscielny will be the man tasked with leading Arsenal’s defence in their attempt to keep quiet the seemingly unstoppable Kane.

It will be no easy feat, as Kane is the Premier League’s top scorer this season with eight goals, and Arsenal have been leaking goals at the back,  already conceding 16.

As Arsenal’s quickest and most reliable centre-back, Koscielny will be the opponent Kane will have to look out for. But it will have to be a stellar performance from the Frenchman to keep this striker out.

2. Alexandre Lacazette vs Jan Vertonghen

Arsene Wenger was criticised in Arsenal’s last game against Manchester City for leaving club record signing Alexandre Lacazette on the bench.

After coming off the bench to score in that game, Wenger can’t make the same mistake and must start Lacazette on Saturday.

There is no better game for Lacazette to announce himself as Arsenal’s next great striker than the north London derby.

He will be eager to not only justify his club record breaking price tag, but also prove that he should be in the starting lineup every week.

3. Mesut Ozil vs Christian Eriksen

The battle to be the best creative midfielder in north London will be played out between Christian Eriksen and Mesut Ozil.

Despite creating 30 chances for Arsenal so far this season, Ozil has only managed two assists – comparatively low to his usual output.

Meanwhile, Eriksen has three goals and three assists this term as the Dane continues to be Spurs most influential midfielder. It could be between these two to battle over which side controls the game on Saturday.

Who will be the most influential on the day? Both players will have their work cut out to try and outmanoeuvre the other.

4. Hector Bellerin vs Danny Rose

The rise of both Hector Bellerin and Danny Rose are emblematic of how both teams’ tactics have changed over the last few seasons.

Both Arsenal and Spurs now opt for wing-backs in their game, attacking their opposition with pace.

As opposite numbers, Bellerin and Rose will battle over who can implement this tactic most effectively on Saturday. Sead Kolasinac and Kieran Trippier or Serge Aurier will have a similar struggle on the other side of the pitch.

As two of their respective sides’ quickest players, Rose and Bellerin will battle to out-pace and out-defend the other.

Picking the Best Potential Arsenal Lineup for Saturday’s North London Derby

Arsenal will look to regroup and bounce back from their tough 3-1 defeat to Manchester City two weeks ago. A result against bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur might just be the momentum they need to improve their season.

Here is how the Gunners could lineup in their crucial north London derby clash with Spurs…

Goalkeeper

Petr Cech keeps his place in goal. Arsenal could have conceded more against Manchester City in their last fixture if it wasn’t for some fine saves from Cech.

Defence

  • Monreal

Arsene Wenger’s experiment of putting Francis Coquelin in a back-three backfired in the match against Manchester City.

With Per Mertesacker fit, Wenger may opt for an experienced centre-back to lineup alongside defensive regulars Laurent Koscielny and Nacho Monreal. They will be tasked with trying to keep Harry Kane quiet on Saturday.

Midfield

  • Bellerin

  • Ramsey

  • Xhaka

Hector Bellerin and Sead Kolasinac will continue their runs as Arsenal’s first-choice wing-backs.

Aaron Ramsey and Granit Xhaka could start again for Arsenal in an unchanged midfield. Ramsey was on hand to assist Alexandre Lacazette to earn Arsenal’s only goal against Man City.

It has been revealed that Xhaka has misplaced more passes this season than any other Premier League player. The Swiss international will hope to redeem himself with a strong performance on Saturday.

  • Lacazette

  • Alexis

Questions were raised about Wenger’s decision not to start record signing Alexandre Lacazette against Manchester City. Surely, against Arsenal’s biggest rivals, Lacazette will get his start on Saturday. The French striker has come back from scoring twice against Germany in an international friendly.

Arsenal managed five when Lacazette started alongside Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil against Everton earlier in the season. Fans will hope the trio can link up well again against Spurs.
