The Champions League winner believes the Welshman was more preoccupied with boosting his own goal tally than helping the Gunners defend their lead

Didi Hamann has accused Aaron Ramsey of being more interested in scoring goals than helping his team after Arsenal surrendered a three-goal lead to draw at home to Anderlecht in the Champions League.

Goals from Mikel Arteta, Alexis Sanchez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain put the Gunners in a commanding position on 58 minutes but two Anthony Vanden Borre strikes gave the Belgian giants renewed belief.

The unlikely comeback was completed in the final minute of normal time when Anderlecht won the ball with five Arsenal players – including Ramsey – upfield and broke forward, with substitute Aleksandar Mitrovic heading in a cross from the right flank.

Hamann, a Champions League winner with Liverpool, believes Arsene Wenger’s men paid the price for a cavalier attitude towards protecting their lead and singled out Ramsey for his lack of team ethic.

“The naivety is staggering,” the former Germany international told Sky Sports. “They were still attacking at 3-0, 3-1 with five and six men at a time. All they were interested in was scoring goals, they didn’t think about the team’s success, the win. In the end they got the ultimate punishment.

“It’s not acceptable for a team that wants to win trophies at the highest level.

“One thing I learned in football early on was that if you need a rest, you take it at the back. You don’t run forward so you can’t get back. In the end they attacked with five, six players, all interested in scoring.

“The main culprit was Ramsey. He wanted to get on the scoresheet. He wasn’t interested in the team’s success, whether the team was going to win or not concede and secure the three points. They wanted to get on the scoresheet and in the end they got punished.”
